Percival Craft: A Visionary Post-Impressionist

Percival Craft, an esteemed English artist, left a significant mark on the post-impressionist movement and the Newlyn School art colony.

Early Life and Education

Born into a privileged family, Craft received exceptional home schooling. He pursued his passion for art at Hetherley's School of Art and later at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.

The Newlyn School Connection

In 1885, Craft and his wife relocated to Newlyn, a quaint fishing village in Cornwall. There, they joined the renowned Newlyn School, a vibrant community of British artists. Craft resided in the same house as renowned painter Stanhope Forbes.

Versatile Artistry

Beyond his exceptional painting abilities, Craft excelled as an artisan and possessed a remarkable singing voice. These talents propelled him to become the organizer and director of the Newlyn Art and Dramatic Society.

Move to London

In the mid-1890s, Craft moved his family from Newlyn to London. He continued to exhibit his works at prestigious institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists, founded by fellow Newlyn artist Thomas C. Gotch.
