Early Life and Education
Péter Balázs was born in Hungary and pursued higher education at the Karl Marx University of Economic Sciences in Budapest, graduating in 1963.
Career in External Trade and Diplomatic Service
Following his graduation, Balázs delved into the field of external trade. His diplomatic career began in 1994 when he served as Hungary's ambassador to Denmark. From 1997 to 2000, he held the post of ambassador to Germany.
Academic and European Union Roles
In 2000, Balázs expanded his horizons by teaching at several universities in Hungary. In 2003, he was appointed as Hungary's permanent representative to the European Union, a position he held until Hungary's accession to the EU in 2004. Subsequently, he became the European Commissioner for Regional Development, a role he held until the Prodi Commission concluded its term later that year.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
On April 16, 2009, Balázs was appointed as Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs. He served in this capacity until May 29, 2010.
Academic Contributions and Affiliations
Balázs has authored several monographs, primarily focusing on European policy and its economic implications. He holds a Doctor of Science degree from the Budapest University of Economic Sciences (2000) and a Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2003).
