Australian Designer Peter Morrissey

Peter Morrissey is a renowned Australian designer who lives and works in Sydney. His main philosophy as a designer is to create a life that his clients can enjoy. He grew up in Sutherland Shire, along with his twin sister Elizabeth and four brothers, and attended De La Salle College in Cronulla, a small town in New South Wales.

Early Career

Peter Morrissey burst onto the Australian fashion scene in the 1980s. In 1983, he co-founded the label 'Morrissey Edmiston' with designer Leona Edmiston. Over the course of their 14-year partnership, this design duo dressed a long list of celebrities, including pop icon Kylie Minogue, supermodel Elle Macpherson, Nicole Kidman and her former husband Tom Cruise, Geoffrey Rush, Toni Collette, musician Michael Hutchence and other members of his band 'INXS', Danish model Helena Christensen, Jon Bon Jovi, and Harry Connick Junior. When the partners decided to pursue separate ventures, Peter established his own label 'Morrissey' and continued to thrive.

Expansion and Success

In 2000, 'Morrissey' became part of the 'OrotonGroup', an Australian leader in managing top fashion brands such as 'Ralph Lauren'. Peter retained his role as a consultant. Starting with clothing lines for men and women, the 'Morrissey' brand expanded its production under the guidance of its new owners. It now offers exclusive collections of sunglasses, swimwear, jewelry, bags, wallets, purses, and other leather accessories, as well as luxury corporate gifts. The brand plans to relaunch clothing production in 2011. In February, a new line called 'Morrissey X' was introduced as a "youth brand for aspiring rock stars".

Awards and Recognition

Peter Morrissey has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2002, he was named 'GQ Australia's' Man of the Year, and 'FHM Australia' bestowed that title upon him in both 2003 and 2004. In 2004, he was honored as Designer of the Year by 'Cleo Australia'. In 2003, he created a unique uniform line for QANTAS flight attendants, the national leader in aviation, and served as a mentor for their 'Spirit of Youth Awards' until 2009. In the same year, he launched a budget clothing line for the brand 'Big W'.

Health Challenges

In June 2009, Morrissey underwent surgery for a brain aneurysm and spent nine days in intensive care, hanging on the brink of life. After the operation, his twin sister and all their brothers underwent examination, which revealed that one of his brothers, Dr. Chris Morrissey, also suffers from an aneurysm. Luckily, it was detected in time, and he is now out of danger.
