Early Life and Education
Pavel Vasilyevich Dubinin was born on March 8, 1913, in Warsaw, Poland. Due to the outbreak of World War I, his family relocated to Nizhny Novgorod. In 1926, Dubinin and his mother moved to Korosten, where he lived with his elder brother. After his mother and brother's passing, he returned to Nizhny Novgorod.
Career
Construction and Military ServiceDubinin worked as a caisson diver on the construction of the Kanavinsky Bridge. He served in the Great Patriotic War, participating in battles near Moscow during the counteroffensive. He also fought on the North-Western Front in February 1942, and in 1943 under Velikiye Luki and on the Smolensk front. After completing command courses in 1944, he became a political instructor in the 312th Novgorod Rifle Regiment. He was severely concussed in combat near Königsberg in 1945 and was demobilized in 1946 as a deputy battalion commander in charge of political affairs.
Post-War Life and Chess Career
After the war, Dubinin lived in Gorky and led the chess section of the Gorky Automobile Plant. He was a multiple city and regional champion. Starting in 1986, memorial tournaments in his honor have been held.
Family
Dubinin's father, Vasily Grigorievich, was a manual laborer at the Warsaw Metallurgical Plant and passed away in 1921. His mother, Maria Leontievna, died in 1928. His brother, Ivan Vasilyevich, served as a cavalry squadron commander under S. M. Budyonny and later became a leader in Korosten. He passed away from tuberculosis in 1929.
