Biography of Petr Korda
Former Czech professional tennis player Petr Korda was born on January 23, 1968, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He had a successful career in both singles and doubles competitions, achieving notable victories and rankings.
Early Career
At the age of 16, Korda became the Czechoslovakian junior champion in the under-18 category in 1984. The following year, he won the junior doubles tournament at the French Open alongside his compatriot Cyril Suk. In 1986, Korda triumphed at the Wimbledon junior doubles event with Thomas Carbonell and became the European junior doubles champion with Suk.
Professional Tennis
In 1987, Korda made his debut in professional tennis and reached the semi-finals of the Kitzbühel Grand Prix in doubles with Suk. He also made it to the singles final of the Palermo Grand Prix with another Czech player, Tomas Smid. Additionally, Korda won his first professional Challenger tournament in Budapest in singles.
In 1988, after reaching the quarter-finals of the Munich Grand Prix, Korda entered the top 100 singles players according to the ATP rankings. He won his first two Grand Prix doubles titles in Gstaad with Milan Srejber and Prague, finishing the season among the top 50 doubles players. He also represented Czechoslovakia in the Davis Cup.
The following year, Korda reached his first singles final in a Grand Prix tournament and won another Grand Prix doubles title. He ended the season among the top 30 doubles players and continued to participate in the Davis Cup for Czechoslovakia.
In 1990, Korda achieved his first victory against a top-10 player, defeating Jay Berger in the quarter-finals of the Philadelphia tournament. He had further success in doubles, winning the ATP Masters tournament in Monte Carlo with Smid and reaching the French Open final with Goran Ivanisevic. Korda finished the season ranked 10th in doubles.
Singles Success
In 1991, Korda had a more successful year in singles. He reached five finals in ATP tournaments and won two of them in New Haven and Berlin. He also won the doubles titles in the same tournaments. Throughout the season, he defeated several players from the top 10, including two victories on his way to the final of the ATP Masters in Montreal. Korda ended the year ranked in the top 10 in singles for the first time.
In 1992, Korda won three singles titles and reached the final of the French Open, where he was defeated by the world's number one player, Jim Courier. He qualified for both the ATP World Championship and the Grand Slam Cup at the end of the season but did not advance to the semi-finals in either tournament. Korda finished the year ranked sixth in the world.
In 1993, Korda had his most significant achievement by winning the Australian Open in both singles and doubles. However, his career suffered a setback in 1998 when he was disqualified for doping violations.
Despite the controversy, Petr Korda's talent and success in tennis remain noteworthy. He contributed to Czechoslovakia's and later the Czech Republic's Davis Cup campaigns, becoming a respected figure in the sport.
