American Soldier and Recipient of the Medal of Honor

Herbert Christian was an American soldier and member of the United States military during World War II. He was posthumously awarded the highest American military honor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic diversionary maneuver.

Enlistment and Service

Christian joined the U.S. Army in November 1942 in Steubenville, Ohio. By 1944, he was serving as a private in the 15th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division.

The Battle of Valmontone

On June 3, 1944, Christian's regiment was near Valmontone, Italy. While on a patrol, Christian's group encountered a larger enemy force consisting of approximately 60 enemy soldiers, three machine guns, and three tanks. The odds were against the American patrol, and it seemed that their days were numbered.

Heroic Sacrifice

During the encounter, Christian was severely wounded when a shell exploded, severing half of his right leg. Despite the injury, he gestured for his comrades to temporarily halt and, relying on his remaining left leg and the bleeding stump of his right leg, single-handedly moved towards the enemy. The battlefield was illuminated by signal flares, making Christian visible from a distance. The enemy opened heavy fire on him as he advanced, firing his submachine gun. Christian was mortally wounded but successfully diverted the enemy's attention long enough for his comrades to escape. He managed to progress 20 yards before coming to a stop just 10 yards in front of the enemy forces.

Medal of Honor

Christian's selfless act resulted in the survival of 12 American soldiers who were able to escape. He personally killed at least three enemy soldiers. For his heroic sacrifice, Christian was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The brave soldier received the official recognition on May 30, 1945, almost a year after his death.

Legacy

Herbert Christian's body was laid to rest at the cemetery in his hometown of Byesville, Ohio. He was only 31 years old at the time of his death. His courageous actions and ultimate sacrifice serve as a testament to the bravery and dedication of American soldiers during World War II.
