Biography of Petru Lucinschi
Early Life and Education
Petru Lucinschi was born on January 27, 1940, in the village of Starye Radulany in Bessarabia. He graduated from the Chisinau State University in 1962, where he served as a secretary of the Komsomol bureau. During his studies, Lucinschi was actively involved in youth activities and held various positions within the Soviet Army.
Political Career
In 1964, Lucinschi became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and started his political career. He held several positions within the Komsomol and the Moldavian Communist Party, eventually becoming the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Moldova.
Lucinschi's rise within the Moldavian Communist Party continued as he became the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Moldova (KPM) in 1976. He later served as the First Secretary of the Kishinev City Committee of the Communist Party. In 1986, Lucinschi was appointed as the Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Tajikistan.
After returning to Moldova in 1989, Lucinschi held various high-ranking positions within the Moldavian Communist Party and the CPSU. He was elected as the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Moldova and became a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. From 1991 to 1992, he served as the Ambassador of Moldova to Russia.
Presidency and Later Career
In 1996, Lucinschi ran for the presidency of Moldova and reached the second round of elections. He won the runoff election and became the second President of Moldova, serving from January 15, 1997, to April 7, 2001. During his presidency, Lucinschi continued the economic reforms initiated by his predecessor and focused on privatization and integration with the European Union.
However, the low living standards in the country led to public dissatisfaction, which reflected in the parliamentary elections in 1998 when the Communist Party of Moldova received significant support. After his presidency, Lucinschi became the President of the Lucinschi Foundation for Strategic Studies and International Relations Development.
Family
Petru Lucinschi was married to Antonina Lucinskaia, a former teacher, until her passing in 2005. They had two sons, Sergey and Kirill. Kirill Lucinschi, their younger son, has been a former member of the Moldovan Parliament and was arrested in 2017 on suspicion of money laundering.
