Early Life and Career
Jean-Marie Le Bas was a French political figure and lawyer. His father was the renowned archaeologist Philippe Le Bas, who later became a mentor to the future Napoleon III.
Political Involvement
Le Bas was elected to the National Convention, where he joined the radical "Mountain" faction. He voted for the execution of King Louis XVI without appeal or deferral.
Affiliation with Robespierre
Le Bas's marriage to the sister of Robespierre's fiancée made him deeply loyal to the revolutionary leader. He served on the Committee of General Security and carried out missions in the army, acting in Robespierre's spirit.
Thermidorean Crisis
On 9 Thermidor, when it was decided to arrest Robespierre, Le Bas expressed his desire to share his fate and was imprisoned at La Force. However, he was soon liberated by Henriot.
Final Days and Legacy
Joining Saint-Just and Couthon, Le Bas proceeded to the Town Hall and attempted to rally Robespierre to take decisive action against their enemies. When Robespierre was wounded, Le Bas believed him to be dead and committed suicide.
