Early Life and Career
Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev, a Chechen separatist and field commander, was born in 1950 in the Cheberloy region of Dagestan (now Chechnya). After completing his education, he worked as a driver before joining the Chechen-Ingush ASSR's traffic police, where he rose to the rank of captain.
Support for the Chechen Independence Movement
In the autumn of 1991, Yandarbiyev supported the Chechen National Congress's opposition to the republic's authorities. After the accession of Dzhokhar Dudayev to power, he became a deputy in the Chechen parliament and headed the commission overseeing нефтепродуктов trade.
Military Leadership in the Chechen Conflict
When the Chechen conflict erupted, Yandarbiyev was appointed commander of the North-Western Front of the Armed Forces of Ichkeria and commandant of Grozny's Staropromyslovsky district. From 1994 to 1995, his forces achieved significant victories, including the defeat of federal troops at Dolinsky and the capture of Argun. He also played a key role in the 1996 storming of Grozny.
Role in the Mashadov Presidency
Under President Aslan Mashadov, Yandarbiyev served as Vice-President of Ichkeria. However, he was killed in a Russian military operation in 2005.
