Education and Early Career

Born into a diplomatic family, the future diplomat attended Pembroke College, Oxford, where he studied English Literature. Upon graduating, he embarked on his diplomatic career in 1974, joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Diplomatic Assignments

After an initial posting to the British Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the diplomat served in various roles overseas and within the FCO. His positions included:

- 1975-78: Singapore

- 1978-83: British Mission to NATO
- 1986-89: First Secretary in Washington, D.C.
- 1991-94: Head of the Hong Kong Department, FCO
- 1994-97: Counsellor in Paris
Senior Positions within the FCO

The diplomat held progressively senior positions within the FCO, including:

- 1989-91: Deputy Head of the Security Policy Department, FCO

- 1997-99: Deputy Political Director, FCO
- 2000-2001: Chair of the Joint Intelligence Committee

Deputy Foreign Secretary and Diplomatic Service Head

In 2006, the diplomat became Deputy Foreign Secretary and Head of the Diplomatic Service. In this role, he oversaw the British diplomatic network worldwide.

National Security Adviser and Ambassador to France

From May 2010 to January 2012, the diplomat served as National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In 2011, he was announced as the next British Ambassador to France, a position he held until 2016.

Honors and Recognition

For his distinguished service, the diplomat was knighted with the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (2011). He had previously been awarded the Knight Commander (2003) and Companion (1999) of the same order.
