Early Life and Education
King Norodom Sihanouk was born on October 31, 1922, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He received his early education at a French college in the Cambodian capital. He later continued his studies in France, which held Cambodia as a colony at the time.
Reign as King
Sihanouk was proclaimed King of Cambodia on September 24, 1993. During his reign, he played a pivotal role in the country's transition to democracy and reconciliation after the devastating Khmer Rouge regime.
Confrontation with the Khmer Rouge
Sihanouk was a vocal opponent of the Khmer Rouge, a communist regime that committed genocide in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. In 1979, Vietnam invaded Cambodia and overthrew the Khmer Rouge. Sihanouk returned to Cambodia in the early 1990s to lead the "government in exile."
Establishment of the International Tribunal
In 2001, King Sihanouk signed a law establishing the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), an international tribunal to prosecute the surviving leaders of the Khmer Rouge. The ECCC has been instrumental in holding those responsible for the genocide accountable.
Personal Life
King Sihanouk was married six times and had eight sons and five daughters. His family played a significant role in Cambodian politics.
Legacy
King Norodom Sihanouk served Cambodia as its monarch for over 60 years. He is remembered for his efforts to promote reconciliation and stability in a country that suffered immense trauma. His contributions to Cambodian history continue to be debated and appreciated today.
