Plach Yeremiyi: A Journey into Conceptual Ukrainian Rock
Origins and GenesisIn February 1990, a new force emerged on the Ukrainian rock scene: Plach Yeremiyi ("Jeremiah's Lament"). Founded by guitarist and vocalist Taras Chubai, the band's roots traced back to 1985 with bassist Vsevolod Diachyshyn. They were joined by guitarist Oleh "Bilyi" Shevchenko, drummer Myron Kalytovskyi, harpist Alina Lazorkina, and cellist Oleksa Pakholkiv.
Recognition and Accolades
A year after its formation, Plach Yeremiyi took part in the "Chervona Ruta" festival in Zaporizhzhia, where it placed second in the rock music category. The band went on to receive multiple Ukrainian rock music awards throughout its existence.
Geographic Cult Status
Plach Yeremiyi's popularity peaked in Western Ukraine, where it became a cult phenomenon. The band's unique style resonated deeply with audiences in that region.

The band's iconic song "Vona" was voted the "Most Memorable Ukrainian Hit of the Last Quarter Century" by readers of @music. The group's name itself was inspired by a poem written by Taras Chubai's father, Hryhory Chubai.
