Pomponio Amalteo: A Renowned Italian Master of the 16th Century

Pomponio Amalteo, a prominent Italian artist of the 16th century, was born in either San Vito al Tagliamento or Motta di Livenza in 1505.

Apprenticeship and Influence

Amalteo received his artistic training under the renowned Giovanni Antonio Pordenone. He married Pordenone's daughter and meticulously imitated his style, particularly in his masterful execution of frescoes.

Early Works

In 1533, Amalteo adorned the cathedral of San Vito al Tagliamento with vibrant depictions of saints, showcasing the influence of Titian, under whom he is believed to have served as a model.

Ceneda and San Vito

Amalteo's notable works in Ceneda's town hall include "The Story of Susanna" and "The Judgment of Solomon." From 1536 onward, he resided permanently in San Vito al Tagliamento.

Masterpieces in San Vito

Amalteo's most significant contribution is the decoration of the choir and dome of the Christian church of Santa Maria dei Battuti. He painted countless biblical scenes and individual figure groups.
