Early Life and Education
Portia Simpson-Miller was born on December 12, 1945, in Wood Hall, St. Catherine Parish, Jamaica. She obtained her bachelor's degree in Public Administration and Management from the Union Institute in Miami, Florida, USA. She also received an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service from the same institution.
Political Career
Simpson-Miller's political journey began in 1978 when she became Vice-President of the People's National Party (PNP). She subsequently held several ministerial positions within the PNP and the government of Jamaica. In 1998, she married Errol Miller, the CEO of Radio Jamaica, and adopted her double surname.
Prime Ministership
On March 30, 1993, Portia Simpson-Miller became the first female Prime Minister of Jamaica, a historic milestone for the Caribbean region. She served as Prime Minister until 2007 and was re-elected in 2012.
