Early Career in the Piedmontese Army

Born in Italy, the subject of our biography began his military career in the army of Piedmont after graduating from the prestigious Piedmontese Military Academy in Turin in 1840.

Role in Italy's Independence Wars

During the First Italian War of Independence (1848-1849), the general commanded a volunteer engineering battalion. He also participated in the Crimean Campaign within the ranks of the Piedmontese troops. In the Second Italian War of Independence (1859), he distinguished himself at the Battle of Solferino, earning a promotion to colonel.

Ministerial Role and Military Successes

Briefly serving as Minister of War for Tuscany following the expulsion of Grand Duke Leopold II before its annexation by the Kingdom of Sardinia, the general played a significant role in the Third Italian War of Independence (1866), leading successful campaigns in Friuli during June and July of that year.

Post-Unification Military Assignments

After the unification of Southern Italy, the general was appointed military commander of Sicily. He later played a crucial role in suppressing banditry in the Abruzzo region.

Occupation of Rome and Retirement

On September 16, 1870, commanding an army corps, the general occupied Civitavecchia. Four days later, on September 20th, after a brief bombardment, he led the capture of Rome. In 1877, he retired from active military service, having served his country with distinction throughout his career.
