Biography of Ramaz Shengelia

Ramaz Shengelia was a Soviet footballer and striker. He achieved the title of Master of Sports of International Class in 1980 and was awarded the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in 1981.

Early Life and Career

Shengelia started playing in the youth teams of "Torpedo" in Kutaisi under the guidance of Carlo Khurtsidze in 1968. Initially, he did not show any outstanding talent, but due to his father's persistent requests, he was accepted into the school on a trial basis. From 1971 to 1976, Shengelia played for "Torpedo" Kutaisi. In 1977, he, along with other players from "Torpedo," was transferred to "Dinamo" Tbilisi.

Success and National Recognition

In 1978, Shengelia was recognized as the best football player in the USSR, and in 1979, he made his debut in the Soviet Union national football team. However, he was not selected for the 1980 Olympics. The year 1981 was the most successful for Shengelia. As part of "Dinamo" Tbilisi, he won the Cup Winners' Cup and qualified for the final stage of the 1982 World Cup. Shengelia played in all matches and scored one goal against Scotland. He was once again named the best football player in the country.

Later Career and Personal Life

After 1983, Shengelia's career declined. He did not appear in the national team anymore and did not stand out in "Dinamo" either. In 1989, he played a season for the Swedish club "Holmsund." From February 15, 1990, following the founding conference of the Georgian Football Federation, Shengelia worked within its structure.

Shengelia was a member of the Grigory Fedotov Bombardier Club. He was married to a kindergarten worker and had a son named Georgiy, who also became a football player.

Shengelia's achievements include being the champion of the USSR in 1978, winner of the USSR Cup in 1979, winner of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1981, and being named the best football player in the USSR in 1978 and 1981. He represented the USSR national team in 26 matches and scored 10 goals. He was also a participant in the 1982 FIFA World Cup and the champion of Europe among youth teams in 1980.
