Early Life and Education
Rasa Juknevičienė was born in Lithuania and graduated from Panevėžys High School in 1976. She went on to study at Kaunas Medical Institute from 1977 to 1983.
Medical Career
After graduating from medical school in 1983, Juknevičienė began her medical career at the Panevėžys Central Hospital. From 1984 to 1990, she worked as a pediatrician at the Central Hospital in Pasvalys.
Political Beginnings
In 1988, Juknevičienė joined the Sąjūdis movement, becoming the chair of its council in Pasvalys. In 1990, she was elected to Lithuania's Supreme Council (Restorative Seimas).
Longstanding Parliamentarian
Since 1996, Juknevičienė has been a member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. She has been re-elected several times, serving various roles, including as press representative for the opposition in the 1992-1996 Seimas.
Deputy Speaker and Foreign Policy
From 1999 to 2000, Juknevičienė served as Deputy Speaker of the Seimas. During this time, she was also the head of the Seimas delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and chair of the Seimas committee on NATO affairs.
Minister of Defense
In 2008, Juknevičienė was elected to the Seimas again. She served as the Minister of Defense of Lithuania from December 2008 to December 2012.
Honors and Recognition
Juknevičienė has received several awards for her contributions to Lithuania, including the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas, the Medal of Independence of Lithuania, and the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit.
