Raul Amarilla: Paraguayan Football Legend
Raul Vicente Amarilla Ayala is a retired Paraguayan football player who made his mark as a prolific striker.
Early Career
Born on July 19, 1960, in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, Amarilla began his football journey with Sportivo Luqueño. At the tender age of 17, he moved to Spain and joined Real Zaragoza. During the 1982/83 season, he emerged as the runner-up for the La Liga Golden Boot award.
Barcelona Years
In 1985, Amarilla made a significant transfer to FC Barcelona. With the Catalan giants, he lifted the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey. However, one of his biggest career regrets came when he represented Spain's youth team, potentially robbing him of the opportunity to play for his native Paraguay.
Return to Paraguay
Upon returning to Paraguay in 1988, Amarilla joined Olimpia and embarked on a highly successful era. He led the club to numerous domestic and international triumphs, including the Copa Libertadores conquest in 1990.
International Recognition
Amarilla's exceptional performances earned him the prestigious title of South American Footballer of the Year in 1990. He was also crowned the top scorer of the Copa Libertadores in 1989 and in the Paraguayan league in 1988.
Coaching Career
Post-retirement, Amarilla transitioned into football coaching. He has managed several Paraguayan clubs, including Olimpia, Cerro Porteño, and Guaraní.
