Early Life and Football Career

Reginald Temarii, a former Tahitian footballer, politician, and President of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), rose to prominence due to corruption allegations surrounding his involvement in awarding the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. Despite being one of the most influential figures in the South Pacific, Temarii's reputation was once untainted. His close ties to FIFA President Joseph Blatter and former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd further enhanced his power.

Political and Football Roles

After playing for AS Jeunes Tahitiens and winning the amateur Tahitian Division Fedérale in 1987, Temarii joined FC Nantes in France for two years (1988-1990). Upon his return to Tahiti, he continued playing until the end of his career for AS Venus and AS Pirae, winning the Tahitian championship with both teams. Internationally, he captained Tahiti to victory at the 1995 South Pacific Games.

Political Career in Tahiti

In 1991, Temarii began his political career as an advisor to President Gaston Flosse. Six years later, he became Minister for Youth and Sports, a position he held until 2004 when FIFA appointed him OFC President. In 2007, Temarii was re-elected and also became a FIFA Vice President.

As an executive committee member of FIFA, Temarii had a vote in the selection of host nations for the World Cup. Rumors surfaced during the 2018 and 2022 elections that he allegedly offered to sell his vote in exchange for a new sports academy in Tahiti. Temarii denied the allegations, claiming they were a misinterpretation of quotes taken out of context. However, he has been temporarily suspended from all official duties pending an ethics investigation.
