Early Life and Education
Karine Jean-Pierre was born to Haitian immigrants in New York City. Her father was a taxi driver, and her mother owned a beauty salon. Despite her parents' desire for her to pursue medicine, Jean-Pierre did not attain the necessary grades and instead turned to public service.
Broadcast Journalism and Public Relations
Jean-Pierre worked as a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, while also teaching international and public affairs at Columbia University. She served as the Director of Public Affairs for the advocacy organization MoveOn.org.
Political Career
Jean-Pierre's political career took off in 2008 when she served as the national southeastern political director for Barack Obama's successful presidential campaign. She later became senior advisor to Joe Biden during his presidential campaign in 2020.
White House Service
In November 2020, Jean-Pierre was appointed Principal Deputy Press Secretary for the White House. She had previously served as chief of staff to vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris during the 2020 election cycle. On May 13, 2022, she became the first African American woman and the first openly LGBT person to hold the position of White House Press Secretary.
Personal Life
Jean-Pierre is in a relationship with CNN correspondent Suzanne Malveaux. They have one daughter together.
