Biography of Reg Parnell
Reginald Harold Haslam Parnell, known as Reg Parnell, was a British racing driver and team manager. He was born on July 2, 1911, and passed away on January 7, 1964.
Early Career
Before World War II, Parnell participated in various unofficial races, competing in different cars including Bugatti. He achieved success in these races and established himself as a skilled driver.
Formula 1 Career
Parnell made his Formula 1 debut in the inaugural championship race in 1950. This race marked the beginning of official Formula 1 championships. Parnell earned his only podium finish in his career in this race.
He continued to compete in Formula 1, participating in a total of 7 races between 1950 and 1954. During this time, he also competed in national competitions and won several races in the 1954 season.
In 1957, Parnell achieved notable victories by winning the non-championship New Zealand Grand Prix and the South Island race while driving a Ferrari Super Squalo.
Later Career as Team Manager
After retiring from racing, Parnell became a team manager. He worked with Aston Martin and then took charge of the Yeoman Credit and Bowmaker Lola teams in 1961 and 1962. Parnell later decided to establish his own team, called Reg Parnell Racing.
However, tragedy struck when Parnell unexpectedly passed away in January 1964 at the age of 52. He succumbed to peritonitis, a complication from a routine appendectomy surgery. Despite his untimely death, Parnell will be remembered for his contributions to the world of motorsports as both a talented driver and a dedicated team manager.
