Ricardo Infante: A Legendary Argentine Footballer

Childhood and Early Career

Ricardo Infante was born into a large family of seven brothers in Argentina. From a young age, his passion for football was evident, and he would spend countless hours immersed in the sport. His talent caught the attention of Mocho Viola, a player for Estudiantes, who, along with his teammates Attilio and Bernardo Samperietro, invited Infante to join their club.

Despite initially being told he was "too short" during a trial with Gimnasia y Esgrima, Infante's determination did not waver. Viola and his companions went to Infante's father, Don Antonio, a fervent supporter of Gimnasia, to convince him to allow his son to join Estudiantes. With Antonio's blessing, Infante became an official member of the Estudiantes team.

A Star at Estudiantes

Infante made his debut for Estudiantes in a match against River Plate on November 1, 1942. He quickly became an integral part of the club's renowned attacking quartet, alongside Manuel Pellegrini, Julio Gallardo, and Juan José Negri. In 1948, Infante scored one of his most famous goals, a 35-meter strike that found the back of Rosario Central's net.

A Distinguished Career

Infante left Estudiantes in 1952 due to government interference and unpaid wages. He spent three years at Huracán before returning to Estudiantes, where he played until 1960. He ended his career at his former club, Gimnasia y Esgrima.

International Recognition

At the international level, Infante represented Argentina at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. His debut with the Albiceleste came in December 1952 against Spain, where he scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory. He made four appearances for the national team, scoring two goals.

Legacy

Following his retirement as a player, Infante turned to coaching youth teams at Gimnasia y Esgrima. On December 13, 2008, he passed away at the Instituto del Diagnostico hospital. He was buried at the Parque Centenario cemetery the same day.

Ricardo Infante is remembered as a legendary Argentine footballer who left an enduring mark on the sport. His talent, determination, and passion continue to inspire generations of players and fans.
