Richard Keith Berman: A Legacy in Television Production
Early Life and EducationRichard Keith Berman was born on December 25, 1945, in New York City. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Early Career
From 1977 to 1982, Berman worked on the PBS children's show "The Big Blue Marble," which won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Series. From 1982 to 1984, he worked independently for HBO and PBS as a producer.
Paramount Pictures
In 1984, Berman joined Paramount Pictures as Director of Programs. He played a significant role in developing popular shows such as "Cheers" and "MacGyver."
Star Trek
The Next GenerationIn 1987, Gene Roddenberry invited Berman to collaborate on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." After Roddenberry's passing, Berman became the show's executive producer.
The Berman Era
Berman served as executive producer and co-creator of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (with Michael Piller), "Star Trek: Voyager" (with Jeri Taylor), and "Star Trek: Enterprise" (with Brannon Braga). He also produced the Star Trek feature films "Generations," "First Contact," "Insurrection," and "Nemesis."
Departure from Star Trek
In mid-2006, Berman announced that he would no longer be involved in Star Trek production.
