Biography of Richard Burmeister
Early Life and EducationRichard Burmeister was born in Hamburg, Germany. His musical education began under the tutelage of Adolf Merkens in Hamburg. In 1881, he became a pupil of the renowned Franz Liszt, studying with him until 1884.
Concert Tours and American Career
After completing his studies with Liszt, Burmeister embarked on an extensive concert tour throughout Europe in 1884-1885. He subsequently traveled to the United States, where he held the position of professor at the Peabody Conservatory from 1885 to 1897. From 1897 to 1903, he served as director of the New York branch of the Scharwenka Conservatory.
Return to Europe and Teaching Career
In 1903, Burmeister returned to Europe. He taught at the Dresden Hochschule für Musik and, from 1906 to 1925, at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory. Among his notable students was Mary Howe.
Retirement and Return to Germany
In 1925, Burmeister retired and settled in Merano, Italy. He later returned to Berlin in 1933.
Compositions and Arrangements
Burmeister's notable compositions include the Piano Concerto in D Minor (1880), the symphonic poem "Die Jagd nach dem Glück" (The Hunt for Happiness), a Concert-Romance for violin and orchestra, and numerous piano pieces. He also arranged works by composers such as Liszt, Chopin, and Johann Sebastian Bach.
