Richard McLaren: A Renowned Legal Authority and Anti-Doping Advocate
Education and Legal CareerRichard McLaren earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Western Ontario in 1971 and received a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of London in 1972. He became a practicing lawyer in 1974 and served as a solicitor and barrister in the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Academic Positions
McLaren was a professor of law at the University of Western Ontario, where he also held the positions of Associate Dean (1979-1982) and Acting Dean.
International Sports Arbitrator
McLaren has been a long-standing member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He served on CAS special panels for numerous Olympic Games, including Nagano 1998, Turin 2006, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008, as well as the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002.
Founder of ADRsportRed
McLaren was the founder of ADRsportRed, which later evolved into the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC). He drafted the Code of Sports Arbitration and served as Chief Arbitrator from 2003 to 2006.
Anti-Doping Investigations
McLaren chaired the Independent International Commission of Inquiry into Drug Use by Athletes for the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), publishing a report in July 2001. He also served as chairman of the ATP's Anti-Doping Tribunal for six years, until 2006. In 2006, he participated in the Mitchell Report on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball.
Investigating Russian Doping
In December 2014, McLaren was appointed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to lead an investigation into allegations of widespread doping in Russia. His subsequent report, the McLaren Report, implicated the Russian government in a systematic doping cover-up.
