Richard Moore: Biography
Richard Moore is a British intelligence officer who has served as the Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) since 2020.
Early Life and Education
Moore was born in Tripoli, Libya. He attended St. George's College, Weybridge, an independent school in Surrey, England. He graduated from the University of Oxford's Worcester College with a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. Moore subsequently won a Kennedy Scholarship to study at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and participated in Stanford's Senior Executive Program in 2007.
MI6 Career
Moore joined MI6 in 1988 and held overseas postings in various countries, including Vietnam, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, and Malaysia, from 1988 to 2005. He held several senior positions in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 2005 to 2014. In 2014, he was appointed the United Kingdom's Ambassador to Turkey, a position he held until 2018. In October 2020, Moore was appointed Chief of MI6.
Personal Life
Moore is married to Margaret Martin, with whom he has a son and a daughter. He speaks fluent Turkish. He was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in 2016 for his services to British-Turkish relations.
LGBT+ Advocacy
In February 2021, Moore publicly apologized to MI6 officers who had been discharged from the agency due to the ban on LGBT+ officers that was in place until 1991, calling the policy "wrong, unjust, and discriminatory."
