Biography of Richard Tyler
Early Life and CareerRichard Tyler was born in 1946 in Sunshine, Australia. His mother was a seamstress, working on costumes for ballet and theater productions. At the age of 16, Richard left school to work on Savile Row, where he learned the art of tailoring.
Establishing his Own Brand
In 1964, Tyler opened his own store in Melbourne called 'Zippity-doo-dah', featuring clothing designs created by his mother. In the 1970s, he became a designer for rock stars. His success led him to move to Los Angeles, California, USA in 1984.
Meeting Lisa Trafficante
In Los Angeles, Tyler met his future wife, Lisa Trafficante, an actress who had just returned from Edinburgh, Scotland. Lisa inspired Richard and supported his aspirations to achieve greater success in his career.
Expansion in the United States
Tyler started his boutique in Los Angeles specializing in men's clothing in 1987, and his women's clothing boutique opened in 1989. He gained recognition for designing clothes for celebrities such as Elton John, Cher, and Diana Ross. His sophisticated and slightly theatrical designs, often modernized versions of 1940s styles, appealed to the refined tastes of his celebrity clientele.
Recognition and Career Milestones
Tyler's meticulous approach to creating handcrafted jackets with silk linings became well-known. He served as the head designer for 'Anne Klein' from 1993 to 1994 and later became the design director for the Italian brand 'Byblos' until 1998. He then began creating fashion items under his own name.
Tyler received the 'Costume Fashion Designers of America Award' in 1993, 1994, and 1995 for his collections. He also won the 'Michaelango Award' in 1996. After signing a licensing agreement with 'Gruppo Nadini' in Italy, Tyler launched his sports line called 'Richard Tyler Collection' and introduced a men's line in Italy.
Current Work and Legacy
Today, Richard Tyler's high-end fashion collections are produced in Los Angeles, California. In addition to celebrities, his designs have been worn by supermodel Daisy Fuentes, musician Sheryl Crowe, and actresses Daphne Zuniga and Garcelle Beauvais.
