Early Life and EducationRick Lazio was born in West Islip, Long Island, and attended the American University in Washington, D.C., where he earned his law degree.
Early Career in Law and Politics
After graduating from law school, Lazio served as an assistant district attorney in Suffolk County, New York. He was elected to the Suffolk County Legislature twice before joining the U.S. House of Representatives in November 1992.

As a member of the House of Representatives, Lazio gained prominence for his tenacity and determination. He became known as the "Star of Long Island" among his colleagues.
