Robert Biedroń: A Political Trailblazer

Robert Biedroń (born April 13, 1976) is a Polish politician and the current Member of the European Parliament (MEP). He is a prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement and an advocate for social justice.

Education and Early Career

Biedroń holds degrees in law, political science, economics, and human rights. He graduated from several prestigious universities, including the Jagellonian University, the University of Warsaw, and the Human Rights School of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights.

Political Achievements

Biedroń began his political career as a member of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) in 2005. In 2006, he was elected to the Regional Assembly of Olsztyn, where he introduced over 740 amendments to the regional statute, over 600 of which were approved.

In 2011, Biedroń was elected to the Sejm, Poland's lower house of parliament, as a candidate from the Palikot Movement. In 2014, he won the mayoral election in Słupsk, receiving 57% of the vote.

In 2019, Biedroń co-founded the Spring party (Wiosna) and ran for President of Poland in 2020, finishing sixth with 2.22% of the vote.

LGBTQ+ Advocacy

Biedroń is an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. He is a member of the board of the Polish public organization "Campaign Against Homophobia." Biedroń was subjected to legal proceedings for alleged insults to religious sentiments in 2006 and assault on a police officer in 2010, but he was acquitted in both cases.

International Recognition

In 2020, Biedroń became the patron of Ilia Saley, a Belarusian lawyer and political prisoner. Biedroń has also been recognized internationally for his advocacy, including being awarded the Robert Badinter Human Rights Prize in 2013.

Personal Life

Biedroń is openly gay and is in a partnership with Krzysztof Śmiszek, a doctor of law.
