Early Life and Education
Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on December 20, 1901, Van de Graaff completed his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in 1922. He later pursued advanced studies at the Sorbonne and Oxford University.
Career and Research
In 1929, Van de Graaff joined Princeton University. Two years later, he moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he spent nearly three decades. His research focused on nuclear physics and accelerator technology.
The Van de Graaff Generator
In 1929, Van de Graaff devised the principle of the electrostatic accelerator, which later became known as the Van de Graaff generator. He constructed the first generator in 1931. This innovative device enabled the acceleration of charged particles to high energies.
Tandem Accelerator
Van de Graaff proposed the concept of the tandem accelerator in 1936. A decade later, he successfully built the first tandem accelerator for negatively charged ions. This type of accelerator allowed for even higher particle energies.
Legacy and Impact
Van de Graaff's inventions revolutionized the field of nuclear physics. His electrostatic accelerators have been extensively used for research and applications, including particle physics, nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy.
Later Years and Death
