Robert Lansdorp: A Legacy in Tennis Coaching
Robert Lansdorp, a renowned professional tennis coach, began his journey on the courts in the early 1960s, making little impact as a player. However, his career took a significant turn in 1979 when his protegee Tracy Austin became the youngest US Open singles champion at age 16.
Grand Slam Success
Lansdorp's illustrious list of Grand Slam winners as a coach includes Pete Sampras, Lindsay Davenport, and Maria Sharapova, all of whom held world number one rankings during their careers. He also mentored players such as Justin Gimelstob, Anastasia Myskina, and Anna Chakvetadze.
Master of Groundstrokes
Lansdorp was particularly known for his expertise in groundstrokes, specifically the forehand, which came to be dikenal as the "Lansdorp Forehand." His approach emphasized a powerful, flat hitting style.
USTA Honors
In recognition of his significant contributions to tennis in the United States, Lansdorp received the USTA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He later retired from active coaching and lived in the Los Angeles area.
Criticism of USTA Youth Program
In 2013, Lansdorp voiced his disapproval of the USTA's player development program led by Patrick McEnroe. He argued that the 2012 mandate for children under 10 to play on smaller courts with lighter balls was detrimental to aspiring athletes. He cited examples of players like Maria Sharapova, Monica Seles, and the Williams sisters who had successfully competed on regulation courts from a young age.
Legacy and Passing
Robert Lansdorp passed away in September 2024 at age 85. His coaching legacy has left an enduring mark on the world of tennis, fostering the development of some of the sport's greatest players.
