Robert Woonton: Prime Minister of the Cook Islands
Early Life and EducationRobert Woonton was born and raised in the Cook Islands. He pursued a career in medicine, becoming a qualified doctor.
Political Career
Woonton entered politics as a member of the centrist Democratic Party (formerly known as the Democratic Alliance Party from 1997-2003). He was elected to Parliament as the representative for the island of Manihiki.
Prime Ministership
In 2002, Woonton became the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands following the resignation of his predecessor, Terepai Maoate, who was also a member of the Democratic Alliance Party.
Election and Government
In the September 2004 general elections, Woonton's Democratic Alliance Party retained power, winning 14 out of 24 parliamentary seats. Despite his party's victory, Woonton narrowly survived a close contest in his own constituency.
Succession and Legacy
In December 2004, Woonton stepped down as Prime Minister after being defeated by Jim Marurai. His term in office was marked by his strong leadership and commitment to the Cook Islands.
