Roger of Lauria: The Aragonese Admiral

Roger of Lauria was an Aragonese admiral who played a pivotal role in the Sicilian Vespers, the crusade against Peter III, and the War of the Sicilian Vespers between brothers Alfonso of Aragon and James of Sicily.

The Sicilian Vespers

On April 19, 1283, Roger was appointed grand admiral in the government of the Kingdom of Sicily, which had emerged from the rebellion of the Sicilian Vespers against the French. His naval prowess prevented an invasion of Sicily by Charles of Anjou and later his son, Charles of Salerno (Charles II). He also cut off Anjou's supply routes to North Africa, where they received tribute. Notably, he captured Charles of Salerno at the Battle of Naples.

The Crusade against Peter III

Roger's naval victory over the fleet of Philip III of France forced the French to abandon their crusade against Peter III of Aragon.

The War of the Sicilian Vespers

Later, Roger participated in the power struggle between Alfonso of Aragon and his brother James of Sicily, siding with Alfonso. This time, his actions were directed against Sicily.
