Political Career in Vanuatu

Early Life and Rise to Prominence

Maxime Carlot Korman Abiot was a renowned political figure in Vanuatu. His journey began when he was elected as the youngest-ever Speaker of the Parliament in 2003, at the age of 31, succeeding Henry Tagbo.

Acting President (First Term)

Upon the expiration of President John Bani's 5-year term on March 24, 2004, Abiot ascended to the role of Acting President. He held this position until the Electoral College elected Alfred Maseng as the new President on April 12.

Acting President (Second Term)

Abiot's second term as Acting President commenced on May 11, 2004, following Maseng's removal from office by the Supreme Court. On the same day, upon the recommendation of Prime Minister Edward Natapei, Abiot dissolved the Parliament and called for fresh parliamentary elections. This move was contested by opposition MPs, but the Supreme Court upheld Abiot's actions.

Loss in Election and End of Term

Parliamentary elections were held on July 7, 2004, and Abiot lost his seat. On July 28, during the first parliamentary session, he relinquished his post as Speaker and Acting President, marking the end of his tenure in both roles.
