Early Life and Boxing Success

Rolando Garbey, a Cuban middleweight boxer, was born on November 19, 1947, in Santiago de Cuba. His first significant achievement in boxing came in 1967 when he won the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. This victory propelled him into the Cuban national team.

Olympic Silver and Pan American Gold

In 1968, Garbey represented Cuba at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City, reaching the final but losing to Soviet boxer Boris Lagutin with a score of 0:5. He followed this up with a victory at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in 1969 and another Pan American Games gold medal in 1971.

Quarterfinals in Munich and World Gold

At the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Garbey advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Polish boxer Wiesław Rudkowski with a score of 1:4. Two years later, he triumphed at the inaugural World Championships in Havana, winning the middleweight gold medal. He would add a third Pan American Games gold medal to his tally in 1975.

Olympic Bronze and Retirement

Garbey qualified for the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, where he secured a bronze medal. He retired from boxing shortly after.

Coaching Career

Garbey embarked on a successful coaching career, with one of his most notable students being Guillermo Rigondeaux, who won two Olympic gold medals and a professional world title.
