Biography of Roman Butenko
Roman Butenko was a Ukrainian footballer who played as a midfielder. He began his professional career at Donetsk's "Shakhtar-2" in the Second League of Ukraine. Butenko made his debut for the team on August 10, 1996, in a home match against "Portovik" Illichivsk (1:0), coming on as a substitute for Maxim Morozov during halftime. During his time at "Shakhtar-2," he played 110 matches and scored 9 goals in the Ukrainian championships, as well as 4 matches and 1 goal in the Cup. In 2000, he played 2 matches and scored 1 goal for "Shakhtar-3."
Career Highlights
In the second half of the 2000/01 season, Butenko played for "PoligraphTechnique" in the First League. He played 6 matches and scored 1 goal for the club. He then spent six months at "Polesie" in Zhytomyr, where he played 6 matches and scored 1 goal, also participating in 2 matches in the Ukrainian Cup. In 2002, he played for VAVK in Volodymyr-Volynsky in the amateur championship of Ukraine. From 2003 to 2004, Butenko played for Kharkiv's "Arsenal," appearing in a total of 51 matches and scoring 5 goals. In November 2003, he played 2 matches and scored 1 goal for "Helios" in the Second League. After a brief period, he defended the colors of Dvurechensk's "Lokomotiv" in the amateur championship.
In 2007, Butenko played for Yerevan's "Banants," appearing in 7 matches and scoring 1 goal in the Armenian championship. He also played 2 matches in the Armenian Cup. However, he couldn't stay with the team due to muscle problems. In August 2007, he joined Donetsk's "Titan," where he spent six months and played in 9 matches in the Second League. In November 2007, he played a friendly match for Kharkiv's "Metalist" against Donetsk's "Shakhtar" (1:2), playing as a right-back.
Career at Metalist
In January 2008, during a training camp in the UAE, Butenko signed a three-year contract with "Metalist." In 2008, he played 2 matches for the main team in the Ukrainian Cup against Kyiv's "Arsenal" (3:1) and Simferopol's "Tavria" (1:2). In February 2009, there were rumors that he could move to "Zakarpattya" in Uzhhorod. On May 16, 2009, Butenko made his debut in the Ukrainian Premier League in an away match against Odessa's "Chornomorets" (1:0), coming on in the 70th minute as a substitute for Vitaliy Bordiyan. After the match, head coach Myron Markevych stated that Butenko entered the field because there was no one else to substitute. Butenko mostly played for "Metalist's" reserve team, appearing in 31 matches and scoring 3 goals in the Ukrainian Youth Championship. In the summer of 2009, he became a free agent and left the club. In June of the same year, he went on a trial with Luhansk's "Zarya."
International Career
Butenko played for the Ukrainian national youth team under the guidance of Volodymyr Onyshchenko in 2000. He participated in 2 friendly matches against Bulgaria and Lithuania.
Tragic End
On November 30, 2012, Butenko tragically lost his life in a car accident.
