Biography of Roman Zvarych

Roman Zvarych is a Ukrainian political and state figure who has been a member of the Verkhovna Rada since 1998. He is known as a representative of the radical pro-Western wing within the political bloc "Our Ukraine".

Early Life and Education

Roman Zvarych was born on November 20, 1953, in New York City, USA. In 1991, he moved to Ukraine and became a Ukrainian citizen in 1995. He pursued higher education but did not complete his degree.

Political Career

Zvarych started his political career in 1998 when he was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada. He became known for his pro-Western stance within the "Our Ukraine" bloc.

From February to September 2005, Zvarych served as the Minister of Justice of Ukraine in the government of Yulia Tymoshenko. After his tenure as minister, he held various positions within the political bloc "Our Ukraine", including the head of the legal department and deputy head of the election campaign headquarters.

Controversies and Resignation

During his time as Minister of Justice, Zvarych announced his intention to review the conditions of former President Leonid Kuchma's security and service. This decision was supported by Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who believed that the previous government had exceeded its authority in providing security and personnel to Kuchma. However, Zvarych faced pressure from businessmen who were members of parliament and had strong positions in the oil refining industry.

On the evening of February 16, 2005, Zvarych announced his resignation, citing interference from businessmen in his ministry's work. However, President Viktor Yushchenko refused to accept his resignation, stating that finding consensus was the responsibility of the government. Zvarych indicated his willingness to reverse his decision depending on the position of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

Later Career

Following the resignation of the Tymoshenko government, Zvarych left the cabinet and joined the apparatus of the People's Union "Our Ukraine" party. He became the head of the legal department of the electoral bloc "Our Ukraine" and deputy head of the election campaign headquarters.

After the parliamentary elections in 2006, Zvarych actively participated in the formation of the "Orange" government coalition (BYuT - "Our Ukraine" - Socialist Party). He later engaged in negotiations with representatives of the "anti-crisis coalition" (Party of Regions - Communist Party - Socialist Party) to incorporate "Our Ukraine" into it and create a "broad coalition".

Zvarych was appointed as the Minister of Justice in the government of Viktor Yanukovych at the insistence of President Viktor Yushchenko. However, he expressed disagreement with the proposed distribution of ministerial portfolios and stated that his participation in the government depended on the integration of the "Our Ukraine" faction into the parliamentary coalition.

Due to the failure of negotiations to join the "anti-crisis coalition" and the withdrawal of its representatives from the Yanukovych government, Zvarych left the cabinet and was appointed as the President's representative in the Verkhovna Rada.
