Early Life and Education

John Maynard Jones, an acclaimed American economist, embarked on his academic journey at Swarthmore College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1952. Subsequently, he pursued a doctorate in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which he earned in 1956.

Academic Career

Jones commenced his teaching career at MIT in 1955-1956 before briefly returning to Swarthmore College from 1956-1957. In 1958, he joined the economics department of the University of Rochester as an assistant, later rising through the ranks to become a professor. From 1968-1976, he held the prestigious John Monroe Professorship at the university. In 1976, Jones was appointed the Xerox Professor of Economics.

Academic Distinctions and Honors

In 1979-1980, Jones served as the Gunnar Myrdal Visiting Professor at Stockholm University. His remarkable contributions to economics were acknowledged with his election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1983 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2001. Jones also holds the distinction of being a member of the Econometric Society and an honorary doctor of the City University of Hong Kong.

Personal Life

Jones has been married twice. His first marriage to Sarah Jay-Smith in 1956 ended in divorce in 1964, resulting in the birth of his son, Dean Jones. In 1969, he married Katherine L. Maitland, with whom he had four children: Laura, Dylan, Brenn, and Polly.
