Early Life and Education
Rosa Russo Iervolino was born on September 17, 1936, in Naples, Italy. Her father, Angelo Raffaele Jervolino, was a prominent politician and leader in the Catholic youth movement. Her mother, Maria de Unterrichter, was from a noble Austrian family and served as president of the Italian Catholic University Federation.
Iervolino received her law degree and married Dr. Russo, a university professor specializing in infectious diseases, in 1964. They had three children: Cristina, Michele, and Francesca. Her husband passed away in 1985.
Political Career
Iervolino began her political career in 1954 when she joined the Christian Democratic Party. She held various positions within the party, including national vice president of the Italian Women's Center.
In 1979, Iervolino was elected to the Italian Senate, where she served for 15 years. She was appointed Minister of Social Affairs without Portfolio in 1987, a position she held in various governments until 1992. In 1992, she became Minister of Education.
Minister of the Interior
In 1998, Iervolino made history as Italy's first female Minister of the Interior. She served in this role until 1999.
Mayor of Naples
In 2001, Iervolino was elected Mayor of Naples. She was reelected in 2006. During her tenure, she implemented the New General Urban Plan, which aimed to modernize the city.
In 2002, Iervolino was elected leader of the local branch of the newly formed center-left party, "The Daisy." She did not seek reelection as mayor in 2011.

Iervolino is a devout Catholic. She opposed the legalization of divorce and the introduction of HIV/AIDS education in schools. She also supported the imprisonment of drug addicts.
