Nicaraguan Boxing Legend: Rosendo Álvarez

Early Career and Championship Victories

Rosendo Álvarez, a Nicaraguan professional boxer, made his debut in December 1992. He competed in the minimumweight, light flyweight, flyweight, and super flyweight divisions. In December 1995, he defeated the undefeated Chan Porpaion by points, earning the WBA minimumweight championship which he held from 1995 to 1998. In 2002, he became the WBA light flyweight champion, holding the title until 2003.

Controversial Fights with Ricardo Lopez

In March 1998, Álvarez faced off against boxing legend Ricardo Lopez. The fight was stopped in the 8th round due to a cut over Lopez's right eye caused by an accidental headbutt. The bout was ruled a draw based on the scorecards. In a rematch the following year, Álvarez lost to Lopez by split decision.

Rivalry with Babyface Mendoza

In August 2000, Álvarez faced the undefeated Babyface Mendoza. Álvarez was disqualified in the 7th round for repeated low blows. However, in a second fight in March 2001, Álvarez defeated Mendoza by split decision. They met again in March 2003, with Álvarez emerging victorious by majority decision. A fourth bout in October 2004 also went to Álvarez, who won by split decision.

Defeat by Jorge Arce

In April 2006, Álvarez challenged Mexican boxer Jorge Arce. Álvarez weighed in two kilograms over the limit, so the title was only on the line for Arce. Arce dominated the fight, landing more punches, but Álvarez had the greater accuracy. In the 6th round, Arce landed a left hook to Álvarez's liver, sending him to the canvas. Álvarez failed to beat the count, and the referee stopped the bout.

Retirement and Legacy

Rosendo Álvarez retired from boxing in 2010. He holds an impressive record of 35 victories (27 by knockout), 7 defeats, and 3 draws. Álvarez is widely considered one of Nicaragua's greatest boxers and a respected figure in the sport worldwide.
