Roxanne Modafferi: Early Life and Martial Arts Training
Roxanne Modafferi, an American mixed martial artist, was born on September 24, 1982, in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. As a teenager in Pennsylvania, she began training in Taekwondo, transitioning to American Kenpo Karate shortly after. To further her grappling skills, she joined a Judo club in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where she earned a brown belt within three years.
University Education and Intensive Training
Prior to leaving home to attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Modafferi acquired another brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Royce Gracie's association in Adams, Massachusetts, where she underwent intense training for approximately three months. At university, she majored in Japanese while pursuing a minor in linguistics. While continuing to compete in grappling tournaments, Modafferi trained at another Royce Gracie affiliate in Hartford, Connecticut.
Training in Boston and Japan
During summer breaks, Modafferi ventured to Boston to train at Joao Amaral's club. There, she encountered tough training partners who relentlessly exposed her weaknesses. From September 2003 to June 2004, she traveled to Tokyo, Japan, where she fought in mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jutsu competitions. She achieved three wins in the female category of the Smackgirl promotion, including a victory over Jennifer Howe, then considered the best female fighter in the US, if not the world.
Professional MMA Career
Following her university graduation in May 2005, Modafferi taught English in Japan. Her return in July 2005 marked the beginning of her professional MMA career. She defeated Cassandra Rivers-Blasso by split decision in February 2007 for the Fatal Femmes Fighting women's championship. Later that year, she claimed the K-GRACE tournament title by overcoming Hee Jin Lee, Megumi Yabushita, and Marloes Coenen. She successfully defended her title against Vanessa Porto in April 2008 via third-round technical knockout.
Debut in Strikeforce and UFC
Modafferi made her Strikeforce debut on November 7, 2009, in Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers. Unfortunately, she was eliminated in the first round. In 2012, she fought in Japan and suffered a setback against Takayo Hashi. She later withdrew from a scheduled bout due to a neck injury.
In 2017, Modafferi was called in as a replacement for Sijara Eubanks and lost the fight, but she and her opponent, Nicco Montano, earned the Fight of the Night honor. She continued to compete in the UFC, including a victory over Antonina Shevchenko in 2019, making her the first female UFC fighter to win a bout in Russia.
Recent Career and Legacy
Modafferi has remained active in the sport, although her most recent fight in January 2021 resulted in a loss to Viviane Araujo by unanimous decision. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated resilience, determination, and a passion for martial arts. As of 2023, she holds a professional MMA record of 25 wins, 21 losses, and 1 draw.
