Roy O. Disney: Founder and Businessman
Roy O. Disney, an American banker, entrepreneur, and film producer, co-founded the Walt Disney Company alongside his younger brother, Walt Disney. He served as the company's CEO (1929-1971) and president (1945-1971).
Early Life and Family
Roy was born to Elias Disney and Flora Call in Chicago, Illinois. In April 1925, he married Edna Francis, and they welcomed their son, Roy Edward Disney, on January 10, 1930. While Walt was the creative genius behind the company, Roy played a vital role in making it financially stable.
Role in the Walt Disney Company
Roy was the business mastermind who ensured the company's financial success. He also played a crucial role in the construction of Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which opened in 1955.
Legacy and Retirement
After Walt's death, Roy supervised the completion of Disney World and renamed it Walt Disney World in honor of his brother. He retired shortly after its grand opening in October 1971. Two months later, Roy passed away from a stroke at the age of 78.
Memorial and Honor
A statue of Roy O. Disney sitting on a bench with Minnie Mouse can be found in Town Square in the Magic Kingdom. His legacy continues through his son, Roy Edward Disney, who served as a director of The Walt Disney Company and was listed as one of the 400 wealthiest people in America in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Roy Edward Disney passed away on December 16, 2009.
