Early Life and Education
Renowned Armenian viticulturist and biologist Raphael A. Yerghesyan was born on January 6, 1909, in Bitlis, Turkey. He earned his degree with honors in horticulture from the Armenian Agricultural Institute in 1936 and went on to pursue graduate studies at the Leningrad Institute of Biology from 1936 to 1939.
Academic Career
Yerghesyan's academic accomplishments included a Candidate's degree in Biological Sciences (1949) and a Doctorate in Agricultural Sciences (1970). From 1950 to 1979, he served as Head of the Department of Agricultural Techniques at the Armenian Research Institute of Viticulture, Enology, and Horticulture. He continued his work at the institute as a scientific consultant from 1980 onwards.
Viticultural Research
Yerghesyan conducted extensive research on the affinity and adaptation of 16 rootstock and 15 scion grape varieties. His key contributions include:
- Development of 5 phylloxera-resistant grape varieties
- Creation of 2 seedless grape varieties with large berries- Design and implementation of the highly effective star-shaped grape bush system
Technological Innovations
Beyond his viticultural research, Yerghesyan made significant technological advances:
- Development of techniques for constructing terraced vineyards on hilly terrain
- Implementation of a comprehensive set of agricultural practices for these vineyards
- Creation of a technology for growing grapes in non-irrigated conditions in northern Armenia
Publications and Recognition
Yerghesyan authored four books, 11 brochures, and held two patents. His work earned him numerous accolades, including medals from the USSR, the USSR Exhibition of Economic Achievements, and a Certificate of Honor from the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR.
