Biography of Runi Brattaberg
Runi Brattaberg, an opera bass singer, was born in 1966 in the village of Vágur on the Faroe Islands. He comes from a family of artists, with his parents Arní and Karin Brattaberg. Before pursuing a career in singing, Brattaberg trained as a documentary photographer in Copenhagen.
Education and Early Career
In 1997, Brattaberg began his formal training at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied until 1999. He then continued his education at the International Opera Studio at the Zurich Opera House from 1999 to 2000. These prestigious institutions provided him with a solid foundation in vocal technique and performance.
Professional Engagements
Following his training, Brattaberg made his debut in German theaters such as Mainz, Ulm, Detmold, and Bern. His exceptional talent caught the attention of the National Theater Mannheim, where he was invited to perform for two consecutive seasons from 2009 to 2011. During his time in Mannheim, Brattaberg showcased his prowess in Wagnerian roles, including Gurnemanz, Hagen, Hunding, Fafner, Veit Pogner, König Heinrich, and Basilio in "Il Barbiere di Siviglia."
Brattaberg's reputation as a versatile bass singer allowed him to perform in numerous renowned opera houses and theaters worldwide. He has been a guest artist at De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, the theaters in Lausanne and Bonn, Aalto Theatre in Essen, and Opéra Bastille in Paris. Additionally, he has been invited to the Metropolitan Opera in New York to sing the roles of Hagen and Baron Ochs since the 2008-2009 season.
Notable Performances
In May 2011, Brattaberg stepped in to replace the ill Austrian bass Kurt Rydl as Baron Ochs in Amsterdam, under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. This opportunity showcased his adaptability and professionalism in handling last-minute changes in demanding roles.
Brattaberg's impressive repertoire also includes the roles of Philippe II in "Don Carlos," Padre Guardiano in "La forza del destino," Ramphis in "Aida," Banco in "Macbeth," Rocco in "Fidelio," Seneca in "L'incoronazione di Poppea," Kaspar in "Der Freischütz," Commendatore in "Don Giovanni," Gremin in "Eugene Onegin," and Doktor in "Wozzeck."
