Ruth Benerito - A Pioneer in the Textile Industry

Ruth Benerito, an American chemist and inventor, is best known for her groundbreaking work in the textile industry. She revolutionized the production of cotton fabrics, creating materials that do not require ironing after washing. Her desire to eliminate wrinkles on clothing stemmed from the need to save time spent on daily ironing. Benerito holds a total of 55 patents, all related to cotton processing.

Early Life and Education

Ruth Rogan Benerito was born on January 12, 1916, in New Orleans, where she grew up. During a time when girls were typically limited in their education opportunities, Ruth's father ensured that she received a proper education. At the age of 14, Ruth graduated from high school and went on to attend Sophie Newcomb College. She later pursued her studies in chemistry at Tulane University, earning her scientific degree.

While pursuing her passion for chemical research, Benerito faced challenges brought on by the Great Depression. She temporarily shifted her focus to teaching in local schools in Jefferson Parish, just west of New Orleans. During her time at Newcomb College, Ruth delved into quantitative analysis, physical and organic chemistry, kinetics, and thermodynamics. Alongside her teaching responsibilities, she continued her studies at Tulane University in the evenings, earning a master's degree.

Contributions to Science and Career

During World War II, Benerito taught college students. By the end of the war, she obtained her doctorate in physical chemistry. In 1950, she married Frank Benerito and began working at the Southern Regional Research Center of the United States Department of Agriculture in New Orleans, where she spent a significant portion of her career.

In later years, Benerito conducted research on cotton fibers while also teaching at Tulane University and the University of New Orleans. She continued to teach even after her retirement in 1986. One of her most notable discoveries was the development of processed cotton, which earned her 55 patents. Clothing made from this cotton exhibited exceptional strength and minimal wrinkling.

Benerito made her breakthrough while working at the United States Department of Agriculture laboratory in the 1950s. Motivated by the desire to save time spent on laborious ironing, she chemically treated the surface of cotton to increase its resistance to wrinkles. In addition to this effect, the fabric became less prone to staining and more fire-resistant. Her invention was hailed as a "savior" for the cotton industry.

The Science Behind Benerito's Invention

The secret to Benerito's invention lies in the process that forms intermolecular bonds. Approximately 90% of cotton fibers consist of cellulose. Similar to synthetic nylon and polyester fibers, cellulose is a polymer, meaning its molecules form long chains containing thousands of atoms. Benerito discovered a method to chemically bond the long, chain-like cellulose molecules together.

It was already known that cellulose molecules can adhere to each other due to weak hydrogen bonds. Benerito strengthened these hydrogen bonds, resulting in a procedure that effectively "sewed" the cotton fibers together. This process made cotton resistant to wrinkle formation.

Other Contributions

In addition to her significant contributions to the textile industry, Benerito developed a method for intravenous fat infusion during the Korean War. This procedure was used to nourish severely wounded soldiers who were unable to feed themselves.

In 2008, Benerito was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, recognizing her remarkable achievements.
