Biography of Sahib Geray

Sahib I Geray (Sahib-Girey in Crimean, I Sahib Geray in Ottoman Turkish, Säxip Gäray in Tatar) was born in 1501 and died in 1551. He was the Khan of Crimea from 1532 to 1551 and the Khan of Kazan from 1521 to 1524. He was the son of Mengli I Geray.

Rise to Power

In response to the requests of the people of Kazan to have a ruler from the Crimean dynasty, Khan Mehmed I Geray sent his younger brother Sahib to Kazan in 1521. Sahib ruled Kazan for three years before passing the throne to his nephew Safa-Girey and moving to the Ottoman capital of Constantinople.

Rule as Khan of Crimea

In 1532, Sahib became the Khan of Crimea after his brother Saadat I Geray abdicated and the brief reign of Islam I Geray. At the beginning of his rule, Sahib faced challenges from Islam I, who schemed against him in an attempt to regain the throne.

Consolidation of Power

Sahib continued the policies of his predecessor in taming the nobility. He brought the Mansur and Sedjevut families closer to the court, reducing the influence of the Shirin noble family. Sahib also elevated many members of the service nobility to weaken the aristocracy's power.

Economic Development

To develop the state's economy, Sahib actively encouraged the sedentary lifestyle of the nomadic Nogais in the steppe region. He frequently supported the Ottomans with his troops in their European campaigns.

Fall from Power and Death

Due to intrigues by officials in Istanbul, Sahib fell out of favor with the Ottoman Sultan and was removed from power. Shortly after, he was killed by his grandnephew Buyuk Geray in Circassia. Sahib's body was transported to Bakhchisaray and honorably buried in the Salachikskoye Durbe.
