Early Life and Education

Sally Yates was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1960. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and went on to receive her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1986.

Legal Career

Private Practice:

After her admission to the Georgia State Bar in 1986, Yates worked as an attorney at the law firm King & Spalding, specializing in commercial litigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney:

In 1989, Yates joined the U.S. Department of Justice as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. She investigated various types of cases, including political corruption.

U.S. Attorney:

On March 10, 2010, Yates made history by becoming the first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.

Deputy Attorney General:

President Barack Obama nominated Yates to the position of Deputy Attorney General in 2015. She held this role until January 20, 2017.

Acting Attorney General

On January 20, 2017, Yates briefly served as Acting Attorney General of the United States following the inauguration of President Donald Trump.
