Salvatore Cannavo: A Left-wing Politician and Publicist
Salvatore Cannavo is an Italian left-wing politician and publicist who has had an influential career in politics and activism. His political journey began in 1986 when he joined the association "Red Flag," the Italian section of the Fourth International.
The Creation of the Student Movement "Pantera"
In 1990, Cannavo played a significant role in the creation of the student movement "Pantera." This movement aimed to oppose the university reform initiated by Antonio Ruberti, the Minister for Coordination of Scientific and Technological Research. The movement started with the occupation of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Palermo by students on December 6, 1989.
Entry into the Communist Party of the Italian Renaissance (PCRI)
In 1991, Cannavo joined the Communist Party of the Italian Renaissance (PCRI) along with the entire association. He held the position of deputy director of the communist newspaper "Liberazione," which served as the official organ of the PCRI.
Anti-globalization Activism and Protests
Cannavo further established himself as an activist and organizer in 2001 when he became one of the founders of the anti-globalization network ATTAQUE. He also played a key role in organizing protests against the "G8 Summit" in Genoa in the same year. Additionally, he actively participated in the first four World Social Forums and contributed to the preparation of the first European Social Forum in Florence in 2002.
Entry into Parliament and Formation of "Critical Left"
In recognition of his political influence and achievements, Cannavo was elected to the Chamber of Deputies after the successful parliamentary elections in 2006. Subsequently, in January 2007, he became a member of the left-wing radical association "Critical Left" within the PCRI. This association opposed the party's participation in the center-left government led by Romano Prodi.
Current Endeavors
Despite his departure from the parliamentary faction of the PCRI in 2007, Cannavo continued his political and intellectual pursuits. In the 2008 elections, he ran as a candidate from "Critical Left," but unfortunately did not secure a place in parliament. Currently, he serves as the editor of the journal "Erre," contributing his insights and perspectives to the public discourse.
