Samuel Green: Pioneer American Printer

Early Life and Emigration

Samuel Green, an English-born printer, left his homeland to join John Winthrop's expedition to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1630. He became one of the earliest printers in the American colonies.

Printing Career

While Green precedes Stephen Day's arrival in America by eight years, there is no evidence of his involvement in printing during that period. It was only a decade after Day's establishment that Green embarked on his printing venture.

Civic and Military Roles

Beyond his printing career, Green served as Cambridge's town clerk and captain of its militia. He was a prominent figure in the community.

Legacy of Book Printers

Green's prolific family of nineteen children, born from two marriages, continued his legacy as printers throughout the American colonies. His descendants worked in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Nova Scotia, and beyond.

Notable Publication: The Eliot Bible

Perhaps Green's most notable work is the Eliot Bible, which he printed alongside Marmaduke Johnson in 1663. Translated into the Massachuset language by missionary John Eliot, it was the first Bible printed in the New World.
