Samvel Kasaboglyan: From Football Player to Coaching Legend
Early Career as a PlayerBorn into a footballing family, Samvel Kasaboglyan began his career as a player in 1974 with the Araks Yerevan reserve team. Despite his impressive performances, he failed to break into the first team and moved to Shirak in 1976 for the second tier league. After a brief return to Araks Yerevan, he retired in 1978 with 145 appearances and 14 goals.
Transition to Coaching
Following his retirement, Kasaboglyan embarked on a coaching career. He led the Yerevan club Arabkir for a season before joining Ararat-2 in 1988. Under his guidance, the team won the 1990 Second Lower League championship and advanced to the USSR Second League's Central Zone. However, Ararat-2's performance in the higher division proved unsuccessful.
Club Coaching Successes
With the dissolution of the USSR, Kasaboglyan joined AOSS Yerevan as an assistant coach before taking over the reins of Karabakh Stepanakert in 1999. Financial difficulties forced Karabakh to withdraw from the championship, leaving Kasaboglyan unemployed. He subsequently led Zvartnots Yerevan in 2000, achieving significant success. The team reached the Armenian Cup final twice during his tenure, in 2000 and 2002. They also won the silver medal in the 2001 Armenian Premier League.
Coaching Challenges
Kasaboglyan faced coaching setbacks when Zvartnots Yerevan disbanded due to financial problems in 2003. He then took charge of Kilikia Yerevan in 2004 but was dismissed after a series of poor results. Despite these disappointments, he returned to Ararat-2 in 2005 and guided the team to promotion to the Armenian Premier League in his second season. However, legal disputes over the club's name resulted in Kasaboglyan's dismissal.
Legacy and Family
Samvel Kasaboglyan's legacy in Armenian football is significant. His son, Levon Kasaboglyan, also became a footballer, playing under his father's management at Zvartnots-AAL in 2002. Samvel Kasaboglyan's passion for the sport and his unwavering commitment to his players have earned him the respect and admiration of the Armenian football community.
